maternal mental health
Looking at the images of expecting mothers or new moms and feeling like that you don’t fit that “societal mold?” or already considering how quickly you can clear your search history after looking into maternal mental health? Maybe just feeling incredibly alone in this stage and wondering if you will ever feel “normal” or like yourself again? Every one of these thoughts is valid and you are not alone in these feelings. There is help available.
Parenting is a HUGE transitional phase and it’s not a one-size fits all. It’s an experience that is unique, for both moms and dads. At Revival we understand the value in providing unique and specialized care in the perinatal phase. The perinatal period is defined as the period between conception to one year post-partum. Jess prioritized becoming trained in perinatal mental health because maternal mental health is the leading complication after birth and offering specialized care locally is a passion of hers. Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) are often overlooked or undiagnosed. If you had a child over a year ago, 3 years ago, or even 8 years ago and are feeling like your mood and behaviors have not been the same since, please reach out and get the quality care you deserve.
Expectations of Perinatal Mental Health Services at Revival:
1. Therapeutic Support from your provider that are tailored to your needs. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is emphasized to identify and acknowledge the associations between your thoughts, emotions and actions. Jess recognizes the importance and value of having a safe space for sharing your experiences, thoughts and development of coping skills.
2. Education around perinatal mental health. Its important to normalize this experience, even the not so glamorous parts and reduce the attached stigma. Understanding your own condition can help ease guilt and shame.
3. Mindfulness & Relaxation Techniques to manage symptoms and improve emotional regulation.
4. Building a Support Network through encouraging regular self-care practices. This may include carving out time for personal interests, physical movement and relationships to improve your overall well-being.
5. Open Communication with partners and supports will be encouraged. Effective communication skills, boundary setting and assertiveness will be key components of navigating this new role and prioritizing your recovery.
6. Check-ins. The first few weeks following bringing your baby home can be incredibly overwhelming. When established in care prenatally, Jess prioritizes 2-3 check-ins in the first 6 weeks to ensure follow-up and support to clients.
Offering quality care to parents navigating this perinatal phase of life is not only crucial, but a passion of Jess’.
